about

Mimetic is a twenty-minute electroacoustic piece divided into three seamless parts of three, six, and eleven minutes respectively. It studies the relationship between organic and synthetic soundscapes. By ebbing and flowing between field recordings and synthesised fields, Mimetic investigates the processes by which forms appear out of a mesh of variable relationships. It looks for the intersection among nature, machine- and human agency. The interpenetrating sections of the piece put the three latter actors in a network of affect, in a reference to the Actor Network Theory (ANT). In fact, the Greek word mīmēsis (μίμησις) comes from mīmeisthai (μιμεῖσθαι, 'to imitate'), which itself derives from mimos (μῖμος, 'imitator, actor’).

Human beings, more than any other earthly creature, understand the world through embodied perception and re-presentation. We learn by imitation, we understand by imitation, we master by imitation, but we also hate and hurt by imitation. Mimesis is so central to our being in the world, that Homo Sapiens (man, the knower) can easily be considered Homo Imitans (man, the imitator). Our social and cultural norms and behaviours are thus mediated to a large extent by the underlying ritualistic re-presentation of how we understand world, self, and other.

For the ancient Greeks, mimesis was at the heart of the creation of art, as in the re-presentation of nature. From the Platonic ideal to the manifested reality to a creative re-presentation, art is twice removed from the elusive ‘truth’ or ‘essence.’ And yet, aren’t the animating forces that move nature the same ones that move machines, and indeed human beings? Mimetic is an experiment into attending to analogue instruments in a way similar to field recording and vice versa: putting oneself in a fertile sonic space of animated unpredictability, then taking a step back and listening, imagining, tending. All the while trusting in the process and approaching the soundscape, as Brian Eno once suggested, more as a gardener than an architect. And in the end it seems bound to remain a mystery whether the organisation of sounds in a composition exists anywhere else in the world but in its listening.
